X-GIS base technology and map applications

The Land Board has transferred its popular map applications to a new technology, called X-GIS. IT was commissioned by the Republic of Estonia and created by AS Datel.

Due to the modifications, the map applictions have now a new design, they are faster and more user-friendly. Out of the publicly accessible applications, the following have been updated: Land Information web map application, Web map application for Nature 2000 areas and Web map application for Road Information System. Use of the applications is free and they cann be accessed through the geographic portal on the address http://xgis.maaamet.ee

„The main change that the introduction of the new technology has brought about is the increased functionality of web applications, which has long been asked for by the users but which the previous technology did not allow to add to the applications“, said Viljo Roolaht, Head of the IT Department of the Land Board. He added that the designs and tools of map applications have also undergone substantial changes which have made them more user-friendly. The possibilities that have proved to be the most valuable, have been retained in the new map applications, e.g. people can use the maps created by the Land Board, the land cadastre data and information that is administered by cooperation partners.

The new GIS base software has been created within the framework of the project „Reorganisation of national geoinformation systems for Open GIS architecture“, which was funded by the state from the EU Structural Funds, and it has a common product title X-GIS. While developing the software, special attention was paid to the following of international open standards, as this allows for the spatial data that are collected according to different principles to be accessible by other systems and inter-operable. X-GIS software enables the updating of directed and public services currently offered by the Land Board and has a number of components to display and manage spatial data, perform spatial analyses, export and import data. The software is also used by the registry for the Tallinn City Planning Department and will probably taken into use in other public sector applications, e.g. e-Pria portal and GIS-interface of the Building Registry.

The transfer of the Land Board’s services to X-GIS technology was also financed from the EU structural funds by the project „Development of data services of the Land Information System“.

The project was coordinated by the Estonian Informatics Centre and the software was developed by AS Datel, the winner of the public procurement.
